Hitler Essays (380 words) - Hitler Family, Adolf Hitler, Hitler

Hitler He stands motionless with crossed arms and resting eyes focused straight ahead. He is completely immobile, expressionless, and says absolutely nothing. Surrounded by some fifteen thousand audience members filing into the great auditorium to hear this man speak, the presence he commands brings order to the environment almost immediately. There is little doubt that Adolf Hitler projected a commanding presence. The aforementioned was merely a description of events which took place prior to one of his famous speeches during the pre-war Nazi years, when his party was only coming into power and Adolf Hitler, as a personality, was making his presence known on the scene. This historical backdrop of Germany in the 1930's reveals a country knee-deep in economic depression, and as would well be expected, the climate was ripe for a new leader. Adolf Hitler made his presence known in the form of a Messiah rather than a political leader, offering his countrymen not only economic but political salv ation as well as the kind of cultural magnificence which he truly believed in, i.e. the Aryan race. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn, the son of Alois, a customs official, and Klara Hitler. He was not a successful student, and his earlier years are said to have been characterized by melancholy, aimlessness and racial hatred. It was in Vienna where he developed what is considered to be a life-long obsession with the danger that the world Jewery posed to the Aryan race. It was after Hitler relocated to Munich in 1913 and served in the Bavarian 16th Regiment that he distinguished himself for bravery and was awarded the Iron Cross First Class. It was during this time that Hitler had found a home and glorified the raw majesty of life under fire, the beauty of comradeship and the nobility of the warrior. His soldierly dreams of victory and fulfillment were shattered, however, by Germany's defeat. He became convinced that Germany had been stabb ed in the back by Jews and Marxists.1 Oratory and the printed word were much a part of Adolf Hitler's rise to save the fatherland. It is my personal view that Hitler acquired his oratory skills and acuity through his earlier experiences.

The Quasi-adjective Couple

The Quasi-adjective Couple The Quasi-adjective Couple The Quasi-adjective Couple By Maeve Maddox Many English speakers cringe to hear the following construction: Jack has a couple tickets for the play. Counting myself among the cringers, I prefer the standard construction: Jack has a couple of tickets for the play. I prefer the latter usage because I cant accept couple as an adjective describing tickets. To me the dropped of comes across as slovenly speech. As a noun couple means a union of two. It had its origin as a hunting term for a leash for holding two hounds together. In modern usage it often means a man and woman united by love or marriage. Well, now it can also mean a man and man or a woman and a woman etc. As a verb couple means to tie or fasten together in pairs, or to join or connect in any way. The OED offers two main entries for couple, one as noun and one as a verb. The adjectival use is noted under the noun entry: quasi-adj. a couple more (..), two more (colloq.). All of the OED examples given for this colloquial use of couple are used with the word more: Just you hang on for a couple minutes more a couple more cops to hold them at a decent distance I wonder if I could dictate a couple more letters Its going to be a couple more months..before we decide what to do. The dropping of the of in expressions in which couple is followed by a word other than more is described as a U.S. colloquialism. The spelling coupla is also documented and given an entry as a U.S. colloquial form of couple of. One of the examples is from the writing of English writer Dorothy Sayers: 1934 Nine Tailors III. II. 276 Hed had nothing to eat..for a coupla days. It seems to me that the spelling coupla has a certain merit. At least it sounds like an adjective, whereas a couple tickets just sounds incorrect. Merriam-Webster Unabridged treats couple as a genuine adjective meaning two and gives the examples a couple more oaths and a couple nights ago. If couple in these examples means two, I wonder why the article a would be necessary: a two more oaths; a two nights ago. No amount of carping will alter the fact that the a couple tickets construction is here to stay, but you wont catch me using it. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The Landscape Masters of the Baroque Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Landscape Masters of the Baroque - Essay Example For the most part, French baroque art can be considered as an expression of the French Crown’s values, particularly those of King Louis XIV.King Louis built the Versailles palace as a symbol of the Crown’s total authority, of which the design of both the palace and surrounding land was a direct product of a rigid, rational, and disciplined approach meant to show the state and government control of the king. The sculptures, paintings, and architecture that were chosen to decorate this palace were, stylistically, purely classical in nature, conveying the timeless and orderly truths of the policies pursued by King Louis XIV. However, not every artist in France wanted to be employed by the government with majority of them electing to leave the country, contending that this was better than placing their artistic creativity in political service. The two most distinguished artists of this period, Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, chose to move to Italy, where they got inspir ation from the gentle landscape in Rome.Claude Lorrain elected to paint the lovely countryside in form of poetry, populating the landscapes with ancient monuments and their picturesque ruins, as well as flocks of sheep. Poussin also sought to depict similar features in his landscapes on the countryside in Rome. However, Poussin sought to do more than delight the audience or viewer. Instead, he utilized the classical setting to present human history in dramatic form. On top of delighting his landscapes’ viewers, he also set out to instruct them.
