Legalizing Marijuana, An Ethical Perspective

In today’s society, numerous moral concerns emerge regularly, particularly with regards to the subject of sanctioning weed. Numerous people have depended on the way that cannabis was illicit, while deciding if smoking it ought to be considered unethical. However, numerous examinations have indicated that the impacts of pot are not as adverse as they were once portrayed. Authorizing maryjane can be an incredibly questionable point on the grounds that few individuals have solid convictions concerning why it ought not be sanctioned, while a lot of individuals have more grounded contentions, with respect to why it ought to be legalized. When it comes to taking a gander at the moral viewpoint of legitimizing pot, everybody has an alternate understanding regarding why cannabis ought to or ought not be legitimized. This is on the grounds that everyone’s feeling of ethics and qualities contrast from one another.Legalizing maryjane for restorative and recreational use would be val uable for a lot of individuals for some reasons. The hypothesis of utilitarianism infers that the best possible strategy ought to be the one, which benefits the best number of people. Many parts of authorizing weed ought to be viewed as while deciding whether the advantages exceed the dangers. A few states have passed laws, which administer the utilization of pot for restorative purposes. Truth be told, more than twenty states, just as the District of Columbia have established laws that oversee the utilization of cannabis for restorative purposes as it were. The expanding number of doctors inferring that they would utilize maryjane restoratively for their patients shows that there are numerous advantages, which could get from utilizing the substance.A study led by American botanist appeared, â€Å"79. 5 percent of expert individuals expressed that if there were not lawful denials they would utilize cannabis clinically† (Romm and Romm, 2010, p. 25).This examination likewise inf ers that the top purposes behind recommending weed incorporate hunger misfortune, malignancy, torment, glaucoma, a sleeping disorder, and it is additionally said that it assists with unwinding. Considering the expanding number of patients experiencing such determination, the utilitarian methodology shows that legitimizing weed for therapeutic purposes would profit the best number of people. When thinking about the hurtful and ruinous nature of liquor and tobacco, it is difficult to decipher why and how these substances became sanctioned. While simultaneously, individuals are interested with respect to how a substance, for example, cannabis, that questionably could bring about a larger number of points of interest than hindrances, still can't seem to get lawful. Weed is fundamentally less dangerous than liquor and tobacco and is utilized to treat ailments. State lawmaking bodies have overlooked the indications of possible favorable circumstances of legitimizing maryjane for years.Howe ver, assemblies have recently authorized substances, including liquor and tobacco, without the benefit of the substances progressing or improving clinical consideration. Thusly, the fundamental moral contention against sanctioning cannabis comes down to the way that of the legalities overseeing it's utilization. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), is an association that fills in as a data community for issues concerning pot use and legitimization. The NORML Organization additionally fills in as the voice for American's restricting the current weed prohibition. This association presents the way that if individuals are utilizing this substance for happiness, those individuals ought not be exposed to common punishments or criminal treacheries. An ongoing government study has demonstrated that more than 14 million American's utilization weed all the time, in spite of legalities (NORML, 1996, para. 1). The NORML association has gathered a rundown of standar ds of dependable use, which could lessen the measure of moral concerns and legalities related with utilizing cannabis for recreational and restorative purposes. One of which incorporate the utilization of pot being limited uniquely to grown-ups. This is significant on the grounds that, much the same as liquor and tobacco, it is deceptive, corrupt, and flippant to give such substances to children.Another rule remembers limitations for driving while affected by maryjane. NORML expressed, â€Å"Although cannabis is said by most specialists to be more secure than liquor and numerous professionally prescribed medications with drivers, capable cannabis shoppers never work engine vehicles in a weakened condition† (NORML, 1996, para, 6). Along these lines, the no driving standard is implied. These are two of the most noteworthy standards introduced by NORML. The following standard is portrayed as set and setting. The NORML association states, â€Å"The dependable cannabis client will cautiously think about his/her set and setting, directing use accordingly† (NORML, 1996, para. 7).Meaning, grown-ups should be capable enough, when utilizing weed, to contemplate a few distinct parts of one's life. For example, it is significant for pot clients to consider their â€Å"set,† meaning the person's demeanor, character, and experience. The term â€Å"setting† alludes to a person's physical and social condition or conditions (NORML, 1996, para. 8). In this manner, people ought to consider and investigate various factors before deciding to smoke or simply deciding to simply say no. Two different standards introduced by NORML incorporate opposing maltreatment and regarding the privileges of others. In this way, people should avoid any indication of misuse and ought not abuse the privileges of others when utilizing marijuana.Decriminalizing cannabis would help America's cutting edge in getting progressively effective with the capacity to succeed. By lessen ing the measure of youngsters being punished as well as regulated for utilizing or having cannabis, less lives will be demolished because of the war on pot.Former President Jimmy Carter once stated, â€Å"Penalties against tranquilize use ought not be more harming to a person than the utilization of the medication itself. No place is this more clear than in the laws against the ownership of pot in private for individual use† (NORML, 1996, para. 14).Therefore, even our previous President considered sanctioning weed to profit the best number of individuals, because of the high volume of person's lives being exposed to decimation because of utilizing or potentially having this substance. The previous President likewise suggested that the punishments overseeing drug use ought not be more damaging than the real medication itself. It has been demonstrated and will keep on being demonstrated all through this paper, there are approaches to maintain a strategic distance from conceivab le moral concerns brought up regarding sanctioning marijuana. For case, an ongoing report appeared, â€Å" . . . in the 16 states where clinical weed is legitimate, there has been a drop of about 9% in rush hour gridlock passings since the laws produced results and a 5% drop in lager sales† (Crowe, 2012, para. 1). This examination doesn't demonstrate that driving while affected by weed is any less risky than driving while inebriated. Nonetheless, the consequences of the examination do suggest the way that since liquor is sold in bars and eateries, it is progressively run of the mill for higher paces of those driving alcoholic to have perilous mishaps than those affected by marijuana.Especially considering most cannabis clients devour the substance in the security of their own homes. Though, people who decide to drink liquor at a bar or café, additionally decide to chance driving home while inebriated. The creator's of this examination additionally suggest that person's driv ing while inebriated are bound to misconstrue their recognition and capacity to drive, while those affected by cannabis ordinarily will in general abstain from facing challenges out and about (Crowe, 2012, para. 11).However, person's who decide to drive while hindered or inebriated in any structure are liable to being accused of driving impaired, which forces extreme punishments and will bring about loosing driving benefits. Some may contend that cannabis is a passage medication to harder drugs. However, the NORML Organization contends that, â€Å"For those minority of pot smokers who do graduate to harder substances, it is pot disallowance †which powers clients to connect with the illegal medication bootleg market †as opposed to the utilization of maryjane itself, that regularly fills in as an entryway to the universe of hard drugs† (NORML, 1996, para. 20).With that being stated, it isn't the utilization of pot that opens the entryways for harder unlawful medicati on use, it is being exposed to the black market of weed that opens the entryways for people to get comfortable with different medications. There are numerous moral concerns with regards to legitimizing pot for recreational purposes. Up until now, two states have legitimized cannabis for different reasons including restorative purposes and recreational purposes.Washington and Colorado have executed state laws administering the utilization of maryjane for recreational use. The Obama Administration and the Justice Department deduced in an ongoing declaration that bureaucratic specialists won't intercede in Washington and Colorado’s newly discovered weed laws and guidelines as long as the states may be, â€Å"preventing circulation to minors, preventing cannabis from being utilized as a spread for dealing other drugs,â and upholding laws against driving affected by drugs† (Dinan, 2013, para, 20).Therefore, as long as the states manage the utilization and ownership of pot, as per the recently expressed rules, the central government won't mediate with the state’s arrangements concerning the sanctioning of pot. The laws went in Washington and Colorado are the initial phases toward decriminalizing marijuana. Those who are gotten with an ounce of maryjane or less won't be liable to pay fines nor will they be organized in light of the fact that citize

Silver is a transition metal with element symbol Ag and atomic number 47. The element is found in jewelry and currency for its beauty and value and in electronics for its high conductivity and malleability. Silver  Basic Facts Atomic Number: 47 Symbol: Ag Atomic Weight: 107.8682 Discovery: Known since prehistoric time. Man learned to separate silver from lead as early as 3000 B.C. Electron Configuration: [Kr]5s14d10 Word Origin: Anglo-Saxon Seolfor or siolfur; meaning silver, and Latin argentum meaning silver Properties: The melting point of silver is 961.93 °C, boiling point is 2212 °C, specific gravity is 10.50 (20 °C), with a valence of 1 or 2. Pure silver has a brilliant white metallic luster. Silver is slightly harder than gold. It is very ductile and malleable, exceeded in these properties by gold and palladium. Pure silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals. Silver possesses the lowest contact resistance of all metals. Silver is stable in pure air and water, although it tarnishes upon exposure to ozone, hydrogen sulfide, or air containing sulfur. Uses: The alloys of silver have many commercial uses. Sterling silver (92.5% silver, with copper or other metals) is used for silverware and jewelry. Silver is used in photography, dental compounds, solder, brazing, electrical contacts, batteries, mirrors, and printed circuits. Freshly deposited silver is is the best known reflector of visible light, but it rapidly tarnishes and loses its reflectance. Silver fulminate (Ag2C2N2O2) is a powerful explosive. Silver iodide is used in cloud seeding to produce rain. Silver chloride can be made transparent and is also used as a cement for glass. Silver nitrate, or lunar caustic, is used extensively in photography. Although silver itself is not considered toxic, most of its salts are poisonous, due to the anions involved. Exposure to silver (metal and soluble compounds) should not exceed 0.01 mg/M3 (8 hour time-weighted average for a 40 hour week). Silver compounds can be absorbed into the circulatory system, with deposition of reduced silver in body tissues. This may result in argyria, which is characterized by a greyish pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes. Silver is germicidal and may be used to kill many lower organisms without harm to higher organisms. Silver is used as coinage in many countries. Sources: Silver occurs native and in ores incuding argentite (Ag2S) and horn silver (AgCl). Lead, lead-zinc, copper, copper-nickel, and gold ores are other prinicipal sources of silver. Commercial fine silver is at least 99.9% pure. Commercial purities of 99.999% are available. The Cost Of Obtaining A Higher Education - 1633 Words

40,000,000 can be an extremely daunting number. This number is the approximate amount of people in the United States that owe a collective total of $1.2 trillion in student loan debt (Dynarski par. 1). They are only gigantic numbers on paper, but in real life, their meaning is life changing. People are struggling in ways that those viewing the numbers can barely fathom, and the effects are alarming. The cost of obtaining a higher education is showing problems for the people, the economy, and the future of America. Jeff Rausch finds the statistic alarming- $1.2 trillion is owed by those of college age- young adults working for a better future (Dynarski par.1). With his background in business with a degree from Alfred University, he†¦show more content†¦The government has stated an inflation of 107% since 1992 in the sticker prices of college- and while the average cost of college after aid and scholarships has risen only 22%, it is still well above what is considered to be af fordable (Leonhardt par. 214). The increase in the ability to obtain federal loans with an increased loan limit seemed like a plan to assist students in gaining the funds they needed, which turned into a downward spiral. This increase in the loan limit caused a drive in inflation, and the cost of college went up. Students almost doubled their monthly payments in the four years following the increase in the loan limit, showing that what started as a life line quickly turned into a nightmare (Sullivan par. 9). As students were attempting to do what was best for their future, they were being met with a back-breaking load of debt and inflation. When taking a look into the whirlwind of higher education costs, the personal effects are often overlooked. The effects on both the students, as well as their families, can be detrimental. Rausch is not surprised by the fact that 45% of loaners have stalled life events, such as purchasing a home, getting married, and having kids, due to the num ber hanging over their head and their desperate attempts to pay it back (Mulhere par. 2). Rausch was lucky enough to have most of his schooling covered by scholarships and tuition remission, but he knows that he could not be where he

Description of a person that I admire Marie Curie free essay sample

One of the people I really admire is a Polish physicist and chemist woman, full of courage and determination to investigate radioactivity. My admiration is not only for her talent but also for the fact that during the 19th Century, not many people could think about a woman changing millions of lives with her full-time studies, especially if she came from a poor family. That is the reason why Marie Curies generosity deserves our grateful thanks. Since she was a child, Marie Curie knew that the greatest desire of her life was becoming a physic and chemist as her father was. He was the one in charge of her daughter’s education due to Marie’s mother’s death. Most of the things she learnt were taught by her father, but when Marie had the age to go to University she started to work as a governess to be able to pay her travel to Paris where women could study. We will write a custom essay sample on Description of a person that I admire: Marie Curie or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Marie earned the money to go to France where she studied at Soborne University and lived from hand to mouth. Sometimes she fainted during classes because she didn’t eat well, but her passion and love for learning was so big that nothing could stop her. Another thing that made her studies at France difficult was her rusty French, but Marie’s tolerance helped her to overcome all of those situations because she knew what she wanted. While she was studying at University she met Pier Curie, who she married and raised a family with. Together, they developed the studying of radioactivity and shared with Henri Becquerel their Nobel Prize in Physics. After that Marie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It is amazing how much strength she had to overcome her social condition to study and research radioactivity up to give her own life due to all of the years of exposure that made her developed cancer and died. At present, after 79 years from Marie’s death, I consider her as a hero for her discoveries and especially for her example of bravery and loyalty to her goals which are still saving lives in every hospital.

In case you never thought about it before... free essay sample

Have you ever noticed how ugly the word ugly is? It is only used when describing something repulsive or undesirable. The world as a whole shys away from the word. Nobody wants to be ugly. This fact is utterly important. You see, I do not believe in ugly. Ugly, does not exist. The problem with the world today is the increasing number of blind people. Now, when I say blind, I am not referring to those with vision problems per say. To me, people who are blind, are people who do not use their eyes. If everyone in the world were not too busy shoving their faces in their cell phones, televisions, and laptops, the number of blind people would indefinitely decrease. I believe that the most important organs in the body are the eyes, ears, and brain. Here is my hypothesis: If you open your eyes, you will begin to see the beauty that exists in everything. We will write a custom essay sample on In case you never thought about it before or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page By opening your ears, you will find that listening is the greatest tool of them all. If you open up your mind, you can accomplish wisdom over knowledge. But if you open all three, the world will never cease to amaze you. The problem today is that we talk more than we listen, we think more than we act, and we hate more than we love. Appreciation for the life we have been given is something I have seen declining over my few years here. It seems as though the most important letter to every individual is the letter I. This fact seems significantly unimportant, except when I point out that it comes before the letter U in the alphabet. What I am saying, is that I comes before U. I before You. I may not be a person of great achievement. I have not accomplished anything internationally recognized. However, the previous statements bring me to my next hypothesis: Human beings are instinctually selfish creatures, and the desire to help others, in most cases, comes only when the benefit exceeds the cost. I have presented you with two different hypotheses, based not by measurable data, but solely by observation and experience. I have yet to experience a life time of experiences. That is obvious in itself, seeing as I am only a seventeen-year-old girl. I have, in the most simplest of terms, lived. I know myself enough to say that I believe that I have the gift of sight and listening. I have the ability to find the beauty in everything I come by, and as hard as it may be to do at times, I can listen more than I speak. Wisdom, to me, is when you put your knowledge into action, and is something I have yet to achieve. Wisdom, in my opinion, is a skill learned over time, time I have yet to come by. I have no regrets, no mistakes. I only live with learning experiences. While this essay is for my application to your school, I need you to consider this: I have done wrong, because perfection, in my eyes, cannot exist. Who I am is not a list of numbers, and is not my seemingly lack-thereof list of extra-curricular activities. Let me tell you who I am. My name is Brice Lilith Geddes, and I am seventeen-years-old. My one goal in life is to positively benefit someone else’s life, no matter what the cost, through the method of open eyes, listening ears, and wisdom beyond my years. Give me the chance to show you what I can bring to your school, the people in it, and ultimately the world. I have the ability to make an impact, but for now, I am happy where I am. I would not waste your or my time if I wanted otherwise, but I will make the best of what you ultimately decide. This brings me to my last hypothesis for consideration: There is a cause and effect to everything, and everything happens for a reason. Ultimately, however, there are no ordinary moments.

Gun Safety for Children essays

Gun Safety for Children essays In 1992, guns were the leading cause of brain damage in children next to automobiles . In the year 2000, there are as many guns in this country as people, over 250,000. Over onehalf of all households in the US have guns. Did you know that in the United States a child is killed every two hours by a loaded gun? This adds up to 14 children under the age of 20 that are killed every day. The children that are not killed by guns will have serious brain damage, which will cost 14,000 per child to treat. This amount is enough to pay for one year of private college. (Gun Safety) There are several ways to stop this tragedy from happening in our communities. The first is to teach our children what guns are and what guns can do. Gun safety advocates preach that children should know gun safety at a young age. The advocates say that there are four rules that children should use when they see a gun: STOP!; DONT TOUCH; LEAVE THE AREA; TELL AN ADULT. If a child does these steps successfully it would cut accidental shootings by 30%. The next way to keep your children safe from guns is to keep your gun unloaded, and ammunition locked separate. When there is a loaded gun in the house it raises the rate for suicide and accidental shootings by 50%. There are gun vaults that you can purchase for your firearm. They come in all sizes, from revolver to rifle. There are some extremely sophisticated vaults out there. One is the GV 1000 Standard Mini Vault. It holds your gun in a little storage unit that has a tamper proof system. You access the gun by a special no look finger key code. If someone tries five times to open your safe, and is unsuccessful, a tamper-proof alarm goes off. It also has a key entry for those who dont care for combination locks. It is also important to keep the keys to gun safety equipment hidden and out of reach of children. Another way to keep your children safe is to have a lock for your unloade...

What Factors lead to hyperinflations and what can be done to eliminate Essay

What Factors lead to hyperinflations and what can be done to eliminate them - Essay Example ral cause of hyperinflation may be described as follows – an unprecedented rise in money supply that is bereft of any growth in output or services creates a disparity between the demand and supply of money. This imbalance leads to a loss of confidence in the value of the money and finally, hyperinflation. The situation becomes such gruesome that any kind of legal tender laws, price controls, fail to return the confidence on the value of the paper money, which is without any intrinsic value to the consumer. If the government resorts to excessive printing of money and if it gets a friendly environment to foster inflation, hyperinflation keeps on sustaining and in a cumulative manner, erodes the economy day by day. The government in such case often fails to match the pace of its currency printing mechanism with that of the devaluating currency (the rate at which the currency is losing its value). (Hyperinflation: causes, cures†) The incident of hyperinflation is almost always associated with the paper form of money. This is because it is the simplest way to increase money supply. In most of the cases after experiencing hyperinflation, an economy reverts to hard money. An investigation into the basic causes of hyperinflation will offer more questions than answers. According to the monetarists and the classical economists, a hyperinflation is always led by irresponsible borrowing of money by the government in order to pay all of its expenses. The monetary and classical theory regarding the hyperinflation center on the untamed seignorage on behalf of the monetary authority and the gains they can reap off the inflation tax. The neo liberals, on the other hand, explain hyperinflation in terms of the confidence crisis. The neoliberal theory of hyperinflation is known as the quantity theory of hyperinflation. According to them loss of confidence of the mass on the capability of paper money to readily transform int o hard currency like gold, silver or other form of

CASE STUDY Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Case Study Example Consultant, while not very well versed with the issues in hospitality industry, was nevertheless of the view that if turnover is a recurring or chronic problem, one must tackle it differently. In this case, while turnover was recognized as consistent problem, recruitment remained the only solution. Gunter’s assumption that issue needed to be looked from different perspective was correct. Consultant’s advice inspired him to investigate turnover and ex employees who had left for better prospects. The resort was seen as major training institute by other resorts who thought of Green Mountain’s alumni employees as top performers. Hence, Gunter took new recruits as opportunity to get hard working and committed workers. The recruits as career building would be able to give excellent level of service and thereby, contribute to resort’s success. It was sound strategy because there will not be shortage of potential top performers as they would continue to wait for their enlistment in the resort. Recruits are motivated because working in the resort is good for career

Dickens skill Essay Example for Free

Dickens skill Essay Dickens skill is especially shown in his creation of Magwitch. Discuss the convicts importance both as a key figure in Pips life and as a means of criticising society. Dickens uses his skill to make the reader believe that Magwitch is an evil person at the beginning of the novel. Dickens describes Magwitch as seen through a childs eye, which is Pip. The first image of Magwitch is exaggerated because of a childs imagination and terror. Dickens uses sounds and smells to remember people. For example Jaggers always smells of scented soap after court and when Magwitch is emotional there is a click in his throat. Although these are minor details we recognise people quicker. At the beginning of the novel we associate Magwitch with animal and beast like manners. This is because the first impression of Magwitch through the young Pip and then the hunt for Magwitch by the soldiers. In chapter 28 while Pip is travelling to Satis House he hears a conversation between two convicts who are being transported by coach under guard. Here the convicts are described as a most disagreeable and degraded spectacle. Dickens uses words like growling to covey the impression that these convicts are animal like. Dickens describes the convicts as, Then they both laughed, and began cracking nuts, and spitting the shells about. Dickens is making the point that if you treat some one like animals then they will act like animals. This shows how convicts were treated in society and Magwitch was also a convict. The ship that Magwitch boarded was ironically called Noahs Ark. This is where animals boarded in biblical time. Magwitchs true personality slowly shows through the novel. For example in chapter 5 Magwitch tells Joe that he stole his pie and file. Magwitch even apologises to Joe when he says, Then Im sorry to say, Ive eat your pie. Joe replies with a compassion answer saying, we wouldnt have let you starved to death for it would us Pip? Then Magwitch throat clicks. Here I think that this shows the two real gentlemen of the story. Although their grammar is not the best one shows remorse and guilt and the other shows compassion. I am very surprised when Magwitch says he stole the file and pie. This is because firstly he did not do it he only said this to divert suspicion from Pip, a boy he never really knew. Secondly in Victoria time people could be hanged for stealing and this shows that Magwitch is a very selfless person. In the most influencing chapter of the novel, chapter 39 where Magwitch returns Pip life changes. Magwitchs arrival has mixed feelings and mixed blessings. Here we find out that Magwitch is Pip benefactor and Pip feels revulsion and disgust, which is also shared by us the readers, that his expectations have been paid for by a convict. This is when Pip realises that he never had any Great Expectations, that Estella and Satis House were never intended for him and Miss Havisham was never his benefactress. In the chapter we now see Magwitch through an adults eye where he does not seem violence or evil. Pip uses words like I shuddered, abhorrence, dread and repugnance in this chapter but soon later change. Dickens skill is shown through this book very well because although Magwitch is one of the most important characters he disappears for a long time in the book. Magwitch is a key character in the novel to unveiling all of the mysterious in it. There is a gradual uncovering a denouement by him in chapter 42 called Compeyson. We find out a lot about Magwitchs heritage that he was born poor and that he had no family. Magwitch talks of his first memories as a young child he says, I first become aware of myself A thieving turnips for my living. Someone had run away from me and hed took the fire with him and left me very cold. This shows how society has neglected orphans his first memories is of stealing and being betrayal. Magwitch talks about his trial where Compeyson got 7 years and Magwitch got 14 years. Compeyson got half the sentence because, First of all what a gentleman Compeyson looked with his curly hair and black clothes and his white pocket handkerchief and what a common sort of wretch I (Magwitch) looked. Magwitch said that he had given up all hope when he said, I was hiding among the graves there envying them as was in them. This definitely shows how poor people and convicts were treated that society did not look after them and that these people felt no sense of place or belonging n the world. Dickens uses this chapter to show the inadequacy in the legal system and also that there is a lot wrong with society. Magwitch was not legally married to Molly but only married over the broomstick this shows that there is no legal marriage or protection for the poor. I think that society is using Magwitch, as a scapegoat so that they can charge him for crimes he did not commit so they can feel better about their society thinking it is safer. Whereas the real criminals in the novel are free, for example Compeyson a forger, Orlick a murderer and Drummle a wife beater. Magwitch clearly has an impact in Pip life for good and bad reasons. If Pip had never met Magwitch he would still live at the forge with Joe and probably in the future married Biddy. So basically Magwitch seems to have ruined Pips life. Although Magwitch does more harm then good he does not do it intentionally whereas Miss Havisham did. I think Miss Havisham is, in a way, a victim because she was left at the altar on her wedding day and cuts herself off from society. Miss Havisham got her revenge on men, which was Pip through Estella but later regrets what she has done. Although Miss Havisham has ruined his life he can still forgive her. I think Pip forgives her because although Miss Havisham is eccentric he has learnt that there can be another side to a person. I think that Pip found this out when looking after Magwitch first he is repulsed and now he loves and pity him. Magwitch brings out the good qualities in Pip he is his moral educator. For example Pip looks after Magwitch but does not take any more money off him. Here Dickens is idealising Pip through Magwitch. At the beginning of the novel Pip was child but now Magwitch has become the child because he needs looking after. From the part of the novel when Pip is with Magwitch he grows morally. He learns that a gentleman is not just a good education, wealth and stature it is about self-sacrifice, loyalty and compassion. Pip even risks his life for Magwitch when there is a note saying someone has news on Magwitch. Pip goes straight away even with an injured arm and there he finds it to be a trap that it is Orlick who tries to kill him. He learns the great value of friendship and he buys Herbert branch of Clarrikers business. I think Pip does this because he feels guilty for getting Herbert into debt in the first place. Not only did Pip feels pity for Magwitch when he is dying so did Jaggers. For example Jaggers tries to push back Magwitchs trial date back so he can die in peace but it fails. This is shown when it says, Mr Jaggers caused an application to be made for the postponement of his trial. Again Dickens makes a point about the legal system when he says, The trial was very short and very clear. Basically Dickens is criticising how he poor were judged in court; it was guilty until proven innocent for them. At Magwitchs trial he is condemned to death and he says, My Lord, I have received my sentence of Death from the Almighty, but I bow to yours. Magwitch says this in the most elegance way and shows his courage in accepting his death sentence. By the time of his trial and death he has acquired a dignity which did not seem to be evident when he was the animal which glared and growled and frightened Pip half to death at the beginning of the novel.

The Wedding Planner Essay -- Literary Analysis

Chaucer’s tale of courtly love may have been written in the fourteenth century, but the growth of love that occurs in the story is still a concept that can be seen in the twenty-first century. The script for The Wedding Planner, a 2001 romantic comedy, contains the following lines, said by father to daughter about the development of love in his arranged marriage: â€Å"I appreciated her. Then the appreciation grew to respect. Respect grew to like. Then like grew to love.† While Troilus fell head-over-heels in love with Criseyde, his beloved needed some time and persuasion to warm up to his affection. The processing of his wooing, her dancing around the potential for a relationship, and each of them coming to terms with his or her own feelings is exemplary of the journey from complete strangers to lovers in â€Å"heaven’s grace.† For Criseyde, appreciation really did grow to respect and then to like and, finally, to love. The full impact of the emotion that the lovers share is felt in Book III. By that point, Troilus has successfully wooed his sweetheart, and she has realized, wisely according to Chaucer, that â€Å"though he was not self-confident or tough,/ Nor tried to fool her with some fine address,† she loved him (Book III, stanza 13). Troilus spent two books playing a game with Criseyde and her uncle, Pandarus. He has written her letters and showed off in armor and paraded like a peacock all while being terrified that he was going to be unsuccessful in gaining Criseyde’s attention. In Book I, the reader is granted an insight into Troilus’ later fear of rejection, an insight that Criseyde is never privy to. Troilus has never been in love. In fact, he has scorned love, denied its worth in front of all his soldiers. When a man under his ... ...ore afraid† and Troilus â€Å"seem[s] inspired† (Book III, stanza 69). This is the true manifestation of courtly love; the man, the lover, motivated by a beloved, doting woman. On this journey from doubt to trust and from cynicism to confidence, both Troilus and Criseyde reach an ultimate bliss in one another. For a man who did not believe in love and for a woman who did not need a man, the journey was challenging and filled with resistance. The remarkable aspect of courtly love is that it defies expectations. With proper, unrelenting, and sincere wooing, as Troilus demonstrates, a champion can be won. Criseyde grew to love and lean on Troilus, and Troilus grew to believe in love. And all it took was 127 pages and two books to get there. Chaucer never said the journey would be short – or easy – just that it would â€Å"bring them to [the] heaven of grace† (Book I, stanza 6).

Consolidated Life Case-Business Ethics Essay

Consolidated life is a prestigious insurance company however, due to the nature of the establishment the duties required by the worker neither required minimal knowledge nor did you have to have a high level education in order to obtain a position at the company. Mr. Mike Wilson however, obtained a business degree in administration. He was hired by Consolidated Life as simply as you can put a clerical worker. He worked in the policy issue department which main duties included processing or in taking clients orders for insurance, customer service, and client services. One would say that working for them; your performance required little to no creativity. It was the same day-to-day work load. Because it required so little creativity, daily routines were repetitive and can be done basically, with your hands â€Å"tied to you back†. Mike Wilson demonstrated how an effective a â€Å"leader† can be in the workforce rather than just a â€Å"manager† by title. He portrayed in existence of â€Å"high fidelity† which is the best experience you can have in a workplace. In the book Trade Off, by Author Kevin Maney, the word fidelity deals with â€Å"the total experience of something† (Maney, 2009). The author also says that â€Å"aura† can also provides an advantage to fidelity. With that being said Mr. Wilson influenced his co-workers with providing them with incentives and rewards in which they can gain a reward at the end of the task but most importantly he provided the right tools and motivations in order for his employees to work in a positive mind frame. This created a system of mutual bipartisanship between supervisor and employee. Model: based on the â€Å"Organizational Model Behavior† Mike’s drive and motivation can be comparable to a person with â€Å"theory y† attributes. The â€Å"theory Y† concept displays how an employee’s work is â€Å"as natural as play†. Also a person with this characteristic has a huge sense of self-direction and self-control. Mr. Wilson showed this by cultivating a modern management technique that motivated its workers rather than coerced them which a person who you can place in this. Whereas, a person with the characteristics of â€Å"theory x† carries the opposite attractions. The individual is not seen as enthusiastic about their job. They are mainly threatened or told â€Å"do it or else† and as stated before, lack the ability and drive to overachieve. They usually follow the motto, overpromise-under deliver. Mikes performance ultimately won him a promotion working in the supervisory assignment area. He won this promotion just six weeks after promise. Mike brought a sense of modern culture although it was seen as â€Å"unorthodox† or non-traditional. When comparing the delegation of authority in the levels of management the organization structure clearly shows that the establishment followed an â€Å"authority† oriented program in which Presidents are first to make decisions for the overall â€Å"vision† for the company in which it then trickles down to the VP who implements the President’s strategy by orchestrating a staff of supervisors to oversee the execution. Situation: There seems to be a drastic change to the division in which Mike supervised some time ago. When Mike realized his unhappiness at his new division he sought a remedy for disaster by returning to his old division forcing him under new terms and most importantly, a new boss. The performance value of his once â€Å"over exceeding† staff was now dwindled and unmotivated. The new way in which they worked became stricter and more inflexible. It was stale and there was no aura of high fidelity being promoted. Problems: The problem of this case has to do with mis-delegation of roles and mis-clarification for all parties. Not only that, the fact is the company as a whole has not identified its mission statement for their employees. With that being said the transition from the time Mike left became a tragedy. As stated before, the culture of the environment was slated after Mike left. It became from being a â€Å"collegial† environment to an â€Å"autocratic† environment once new vice presidentJack Greely took over. Not only did he change the environment of the company, he basically dismantled the structure and rebuilt it based on his power. Until Mike was promoted the managerial style approach was not identified and supervisors, at this early time wanted a change and that’s why Mike was chosen to become supervisor. However, when Jack took Mike’s former supervisor’s place, the organization became, â€Å"autocratic†. An autocratic person can be defined as an employee that is dependent tot tally on a supervisor. This person has no other desire than to do what is only required out of the task and only the minimum. Usually in an autocratic setting the boss expects pure obedience from their employee’s and rely straight on authority from â€Å"higher up’s† with no regard to any self-drive for themselves and lacks the qualities and abilities to take on initiatives and providing an entrepreneurial attitude about themselves. This can be explained by using the Abraham Maslow’s Theory found in an essay article written by Janet Simmons, Donald Irvin, and Beverly Drinnien which it states he says accordingly â€Å"that the only reason that people would not move well in direction of self-actualization is because of hindrances placed in their way by society† (Janet A. Simons, 1987). Also saying â€Å"We must see that the person’s basic needs are satisfied. This includes safety, belongingness, and esteem needs† (Janet A. Simons, 1987)A person in the Consolidated Life organization that can be also skewed towards the â€Å"autocratic† style is Mr. Rick Belkner. Mike’s former boss. This, for lack of a better term, lazy supervisor (whom he was Mike’s supervisor initially) illustrated as a person who rather do â€Å"crossword puzzles† during his work shift then to lead by example, what a competent Vice President of their division; shy 40,000 of a six-figure salary. The point was clearly made by Mr. Greely when he assumed that Mike’s management style would still be undermined no matter how good of his performance. He even went to the extent of assuring that Mr. Wilson will fail no matter how â€Å"high† you move up in the establishment. It is almost agreeable to say that Mr. Speely’s choose of words were not only rude but shows a poor and ineffective leader. Mr. Greely does not seem to be results-driven but ego-driven as his defense for Mike’s work style was inarguable and measured his own assumption to Mike’s performance rather than just judging an employee on what he does best, his/her performance. Reading how Mike handled it; amazingly enough. In the chart featured on page-You can see simple comparing of the two different types of behavioral patterns by identifying the qualities, organizational and environmental forces that are represented by the 2 behavior patterns. You will see the differences between a workers operating in an autocratic setting versus a person who operates under the collegial or supportive setting(s). By identifying the contrast you are able to see what kind of modifications or structures that would have to be put in place based on a employee’s attitude. The attitude in which comes from probably stems from personal goal, motivations, or self desires a person may have in their work space. Some individuals don’t possess the willingness to achieve and be a leader. Some individual are quite happy with just being an average worker and moving up in the â€Å"corporate† latter is something that does not motivate them. Autocratic Environment Vs. Collegial /System Environment Base Questions for Case 1. Describe ALL the factors that contributed to Mike’s lack of promotion at the end. Was his lack of promotion fair? When Mike left the division, he left the process in which he created, to be altered by the new president upon his departure. The flexible leadership that led to the team success came to a halt when divisional vice president, Jack Greely; who’s reputation was described as â€Å"tough but fair†. Mike accepted the position at the old division again without really investigating the provisions in which he was now to work under. He loss total control when he noticed that co-workers were actually more inclined to follow Mr. Greely’s direction because the employees knew the order of hierarchy and knew the consequences of action should one follow anyone’s demands except for Mr. Greely’s. 2. Using your knowledge of culture, explain in detail Consolidated Life’s culture when Mike was first hired and then when he returned. There was a transition in the organization which proved to have opportunities due to the position void. Such example shows that Mike (when he was first hired by Consolidated Life) he was promoted to his position because of the opportunities of change. Mike’s style was not really favored by his â€Å"higher-ups† but because he manages to increase workflow and reduce errors, which created more performance his flexible style was overlook which sends a sign of â€Å"inconsistency†. If you are going to allow a manager to take over the project then let them take over. As long as they don’t compromise the integrity of the company or do anything illegal. 3. What actions could Consolidated Life have taken to prevent Mike’s problems? There should have been more flexibility granted for Mike to effectively coordinate his team. Mr. Wilson’s track record clearly shows that as a supervisor he is competent to make educated decisions and lead a staff with ease. An employee is always happy when they are not pressured nor stressed. Most important of all, when a leader shows reciprocity, more than likely there would be a win-win. For Example, Mike’s strategy to reward his co-workers in exchange for hard work showed the worker was not working out of vain and in fact he/she was being acknowledged and rewarded for the hard efforts being put forth. 4. Who do you think was at fault for Mike’s problems, Mike or his supervisors (e. g. , Jack) or others? Completely justify your opinion. The fault of Mike problems was his free spirited style which usually offends conservatives. Jack implemented a â€Å"corporate† style setting upon Mike’s return.
